Rediscovering Our Mission: A Journey Through the Book of Acts
In our current sermon series, we're taking a journey together through Acts to figure out, "If the church is meant to reflect the heart of Jesus, what should it look like?"
Acts is made up of stories of the apostles' faithfulness to the mission that Jesus gave them. His instructions were clear in his final days:
"Feed my sheep."
"Go make disciples."
"Bear witness to the gospel."
These words aren't directed to the church, they're directed to people. In Acts, the people were unified around this mission. As a result of this missional focus in individual lives, the mission spread dramatically. The result was the creation of the local church.
The truth is, the church as we see it was never supposed to be what we have made it into. It's actually a byproduct of missional community.
To be clear, we don't need to imitate every aspect of the early church. However, when it comes to the main points, Acts accurately portrays the heart of God for the role of the church in the world. We must cultivate a, "People first, program second," mentality. If we get wrapped up in maintaining our comfortable structures, we lose sight of why we exist.
What matter's most is people finding Jesus. If the church exists for any other reason, it will become lifeless and will soon stop reflecting the heart of God. Through this series, we're going to help each straighten and strengthen our priorities and live out our earthly calling.
Our prayer for this series is that we at Finding Life Church would understand our calling to mission, and put it first. This could mean significant changes, but it must be taken seriously if we want to follow in the footsteps of the apostles . . . men and women who had an incredible impact in this world that is still seen today!
Are you ready for an adventure? Let's journey together!
